Abortion Pill Checklist – Overview

You are probably here because you are considering abortion options or have decided about the Abortion Pill (Medical Abortion / Plan C pill).

Whether or not to have an abortion is one of the most important decisions you may ever have to make. Taking the Abortion Pill is considered a medical procedure, so it can affect your current and future health. It’s a very personal decision — and one that only you can make.

It is important to take one step at a time and don’t get ahead of yourself and do something you may regret later. Sometimes emotions can get ahead of us. Taking one careful step at a time allows your emotions to catch up to the facts and information that you gather. You should not make an appointment for an abortion until you go through these steps first.

For example, miscarriage is a spontaneous loss of a pregnancy, so you may not need to take any Abortion action if this occurs. About 10% to 20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, but the actual number is likely higher.1

In Pregnancy Decisions, the correct (best) checklist, in the correct order, is shown below.

Some clinics list the wrong order or may not readily tell you some information.

Using the checklist below ensures you can make a fully informed decision and protect your future reproductive health.

Abortion Pill Checklist – 5 Steps

Using this 5 step checklist will give you clarity, confidence, and peace about your decision.

  1. Pregnancy test – a nurse verified medical grade test to confirm a valid pregnancy test.
  2. Ultrasound exam and Medical consultation – to rule out certain possible medical issues, help clarify your pregnancy options, and help answer all your questions and concerns.
  3. Review the facts and your pregnancy options – including medical information, legal information, costs, and additional information you gathered.
  4. Make your informed decision – decide which option is best for your situation.
  5. Put your selected option into action – follow the steps for the pregnancy option you chose by utilizing the people and experts you select to help you.

Network Medical provides all these steps for FREE, and confidentially.

Step 1 – Pregnancy Test

A medical grade pregnancy test performed by a registered nurse helps address the following issues:

  • Confirms a positive pregnancy test.
  • Over the counter (home) pregnancy tests are not 100% accurate. It is possible you may have a false positive reading.
  • Common pregnancy symptoms can be different for some women.

Step 2 – Ultrasound Exam and Medical Consultation

Ultrasound exam – immediately follows a Pregnancy Test. The ultrasound will detect and possibly rule out certain complications and medical conditions related to pregnancy including life-threatening ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, and miscarriage.2  It will also help clarify your options, including abortion types if you are considering that.

Medical consultation – includes discussing the results of the pregnancy test, ultrasound exam, your medical history, your pregnancy options, and your questions and concerns.

STD Testing – If you are considering abortion as an option, it is important to protect your reproductive health. Get tested for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia before having an abortion. These two most common STDs can affect your future reproductive health if left untreated before an abortion procedure, whether it is the abortion pill or surgical abortion.3

At the ultrasound exam and medical consultation, you will be offered FREE STD testing. If the STD testing results are positive, which shows you have an STD, you can receive FREE STD treatment right away in the privacy of our medical clinic.

Step 3 – Review the facts and your pregnancy options

During your consultation, we can walk through this with you. We can review the medical information, legal information, costs, and additional information. Please note that Network Medical staff do not provide legal advice.

Below are some questions to consider, which we can address at your appointment.

Have I thoroughly explored all my pregnancy options?

Make sure you get complete and accurate information about all your pregnancy options. You would not want to discover later that you had missed some information, and have regrets.

It’s important to talk with a trusted medical professional, like Network Medical, who can provide complete information and answer your questions about each option without bias. Sometimes, it feels nice to ask for advice from friends and family members, but wise and respectful medical professionals can offer you information without having an opinion on your choice.

Do I clearly understand all the Abortion Pill medical impacts?

This is part of the question above, but is important enough to double check you covered it.

Make sure you get complete and accurate information about the Abortion Pill side effects, risks, potential complications, and after effects. You would not want to discover later that you had missed some information, and have regrets about your health short term and long term.

For example, the U.S. FDA does not recommend purchasing Mifepristone outside of the Mifepristone REMS Program – e.g. buying it online or personally transporting it from a foreign country. If a person does so, they would be bypassing important safeguards specifically designed to protect their health  Medical supervision is required for a medical abortion.4

Do I understand all my Rights?

Informed consent is critical before an abortion. This means you are entirely informed and understand the abortion facts and abortion procedure for your stage of pregnancy. This includes understanding the abortion risks involved, practices of the abortion clinic, and whether the abortion clinic has medical privileges at the local hospital should you need emergency care during your abortion procedure. You sign an abortion consent form to confirm that you understand all of this.

Different methods of abortion (medical abortion / Abortion Pill or surgical abortion) are performed at different stages of pregnancy, so be sure you understand which one is appropriate for how far along you are. Each has various risks and potential complications, which you have the legal right to know about.

If you are unsure about what to do with your pregnancy, do not take the abortion pill or get a surgical abortion impulsively. Schedule a FREE appointment with us to discuss your options.

The next question is related to this point.

Is anyone pressuring me to have an Abortion?

As noted in the previous question, it is important to understand your legal rights, so you can decide what’s right for you.

Even though abortion is legal, coerced abortion is illegal. No one has the right to force, coerce, exert inappropriate influence, or pressure you to have an abortion. It is against the law in all 50 states for anyone to coerce or force you to have an abortion. Anyone who tries to end your pregnancy without your consent could be subject to criminal or civil liability.6

Coerced abortion means someone is manipulating you to have an abortion. Some examples:

  • An abortion clinic that urges or forces you to make an abortion appointment before examining your ultrasound and your medical information, and before explaining all your pregnancy options first, so you can have all the facts before making a final decision about an abortion.
  • A parent or caretaker who says, “If you don’t have an abortion, I will kick you out of the house.”
  • A boyfriend or husband who says, “If you don’t have an abortion, I’m leaving you.”
  • A boyfriend or husband who says, “If you go through with this pregnancy, you’re on your own and won’t get any financial support from me.” Biological fathers have a legal obligation to support their children financially.
  • Anyone who says, “I made your appointment, and I’m taking you. You have to go.” No one can force you to go to an abortion clinic, or force you to make one choice over another.
  • Anyone who says, without your permission, “I bought these Abortion Pills. Take them!” No one can force you to make one choice over another. You should check the source of any medication you take. The U.S. FDA recommends not purchasing one of the Abortion Pill medications online, to protect your health.4

If you have questions, are unsure, are feeling pressured or misled into an abortion, or having second thoughts about abortion, consider speaking with Network Medical staff and/or an attorney. Our staff and medical professionals would willingly inform you about current abortion laws in California and discuss your pregnancy options. Please note that Network Medical staff do not provide legal advice.

What is causing me to consider an Abortion?

Common reasons some women consider abortion, are fear or anxiety based – which is based on the unknown

Fear / anxiety based decision-making can cause quick emotionally based decisions, which may provide immediate short-term relief. However, fear-based decision-making can result in long-term regrets and negative impacts on your life.

Some examples:

  • Not enough money, time, or help to raise a child.
  • It will impact present and future life – lifestyle, education, and more.
  • Don’t want to be a single parent or know how to parent.
  • Partner will leave if don’t have an abortion.
  • Parents’ reactions to finding out about sexual activity and pregnancy.
  • Friends’ reactions to being pregnant.
  • and teachers reactions to being pregnant.
  • Employers reactions to your pregnancy.

There are answers for each of these concerns and resources to help, if you want to choose parenting or adoption options.

Students have special rights and resources to help with education. Schools and educators are legally required to accommodate the needs of pregnant students, and cannot penalize pregnant students, under U.S. civil rights laws and Title IX law.

We can help walk you through your fears, your options, and offer resources and community referrals based on your needs. With Network Medical you will gain clarity, confidence, and peace to make an informed decision for your situation.

Do not be controlled by fear or anxiety, but be guided by careful fact based decision making and confidence.
