Abortion Pill Risks – Big Picture
Any medical procedure, like the Abortion Pill requires careful examination since it can affect your physical health and your mental/emotional health – now and possibly in the future.
Women may respond to the Abortion Pill differently. The American Psychological Association (APA) research indicates women who have an abortion have a “diversity of experiences” 1. Before an abortion, some women ask important questions about abortion pros and cons and about abortion facts, and some do not. During or after a medical abortion, some women have experienced a high intensity of pain and bleeding, possible complications, and confusing emotional/mental reactions. Some women have expressed surprise at the intensity of the Abortion Pill experience. Some have expressed regret taking the Abortion Pill. Therefore, it is important that women’s varied experiences of abortion be recognized, validated, and understood.
Whether or not to have an abortion is one of the most important decisions you may ever have to make. The Abortion Pill is considered a medical procedure because the drugs are prescribed to cause a woman to go through a premature pregnancy labor and delivery similar to Miscarriage. Taking the Abortion Pill is a major decision with possible serious consequences.
Tylenol, Viagra, and Penicillin are not considered in the medical procedure category. Taking Tylenol, Viagra, or Penicillin can be frequently used as needed, with some minor limitations.
The Abortion Pill – is a powerful pair of drugs used to abort (terminate) a normal bodily process (pregnancy) inside a woman. It temporally changes how the reproductive system operates, by separating and expelling internal tissue(s).
Tylenol (acetaminophen) – is a mild over the counter drug used to decrease minor pains and fever. It does not cause any major change in a woman’s major internal systems including her reproductive system.
Tylenol, Viagra, and Penicillin are in different categories and purposes of drugs, with different risks, so they cannot be scientifically compared to each other, or to the Abortion Pill. Tylenol, Viagra, and Penicillin are not on the U.S. FDA’s Medication Risk Management program, but the Abortion Pill is due to its higher risk than other prescription drugs. 2

The Judge cited several precedent cases and laws that supported this ruling. 3
Comparison Flaws
The Bottom Line – the claims about Tylenol (or other drugs like Viagra or Penicillin) being safer than the Abortion Pill, are a faulty comparison and are not supported in scientific medical research.
The key flaws to these safety claims are: 4
- Flawed methods – To validate the claim, there must be a controlled, scientifically appropriate study comparing abortion drugs to Tylenol. No such study exists, and it would be impossible to do so because these drugs are used for entirely different purposes.
- Overlooked risks – The FDA assesses drug safety based on a range of factors, not just death rates. The comparison ignores serious adverse events of abortion drugs, such as sepsis and hemorrhage.
- Context misrepresented – While Tylenol-related deaths often result from misuse in a much larger user base, deaths from abortion drugs occur under prescribed use.
The table below shows comparisons of various factors including use, known risks, warnings, effects, possible complications, and legalities. This shows the Abortion Pill is much higher risk than Tylenol. It is False that the Abortion Pill is safer than Tylenol.

Abortion Pill
The Abortion Pill protocol of 2 drugs including 5 pills total, is used to abort (terminate) a normal bodily process (pregnancy) inside a woman’s body, by temporally changing how the body operates. The drugs have a significant short term impact on the woman’s body. This altered bodily process is similar to a miscarriage, which is a spontaneous loss of a pregnancy, with pain, bleeding, and other effects. However, for some women the Abortion Pill may have stronger and longer effects than the average miscarriage, with the Abortion Pill possibly producing higher amounts of pain, bleeding, infection, complications, and other experiences.
The Abortion Pill has unique and somewhat complex risks, effects, and possible complications.
U.S. FDA Drug Warnings & Use
The U.S. FDA has enough of a safety concern that they have the medical abortion drug mifepristone under their Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program. This program is for certain medications with serious safety concerns to help ensure the benefits of the medication outweigh its risks. While all medications have labeling that inform healthcare stakeholders about medication risks, only a few medications require a REMS.2, 5
Before using one of the Abortion Pill drugs Mifepristone, the FDA has a requirement that the patient must sign a Patient Agreement Form indicating that the patient received counseling from the healthcare provider regarding the risk of serious complications associated with Mifepristone.6
According to the U.S. FDA, it is a safety risk if the Abortion Pill is purchased on the internet – since it by-passes important safety protocols. 7
Tylenol (acetaminophen) 9
Tylenol is a mild over the counter drug, for use by women, men, elderly, and children. It is easily tolerated by the woman’s body. It generally has a minor short term impact on the body.
It is used primarily for minor pain and fever relief. It has limited risks, effects, and possible complications mostly related to the digestion system.
Tylenol has no purchasing limitations on the internet. No prescription is required – it is an over the counter drug.
Viagra and Penicillin have been compared to the Abortion Pill. Some abortion clinics claim that the Abortion Pill is safer. This is a false claim. All the facts are not included in this claim.
Purposes – these drugs have completely different purposes and inherent risks related to their function, so comparing them is not logical or medically scientific.
These comparisons have been acknowledged as “arbitrary” even by Abortion Pill proponents, indicating that these comparisons are not useful or equal. 10
Research Data – The same safety comparison flaws cited above for Tylenol, apply to Viagra and Penicillin. There are no scientific medical research studies comparing the Abortion Pill and Viagra or Penicillin.
Viagra, and Penicillin are not on the U.S. FDA’s Medication Risk Management program, but the Abortion Pill is due to higher risks than other prescription drugs. 2
Comparing Viagra and Penicillin in a similar format as the Tylenol table above, would show the Abortion Pill a much higher risk.
